I used AI to write an article for six months and ended up being scolded by readers for deleting it

At the beginning of 2024, I followed the trend and started an AI writing experiment. At that time, the idea was very naive: since AI can write code and draw, it should be more than enough to write a few articles on operation. I set an aggressive goal for myself - to complete 50 articles on content operation with AI within six months, and realize the “lying down type daily shift“.

Six months down the line, I published 50 pieces of content as expected. But the numbers were ugly: 12 were outright factually incorrect by readers in the comments section, 3 sparked minor skepticism, and 1 had me deleting the article overnight to avoid trouble.
The worst one was about analyzing the earnings report of a well-known tech company. I asked in the prompt, “Please analyze Company X's Q4 revenue and year-over-year growth rate for 2023. “The AI gave me a set of data accurate to two decimal places, accompanied by a comparative analysis with competing products, with closed logic and smooth writing. I read it and found it quite professional, and only changed a few connecting words before sending it.
At 2 a.m., a reader who does financial analysis left a comment in the background, “This data is made up, isn't it? I checked the SEC annual report and the official disclosure, and it just doesn't add up.”
I deleted the article overnight, but the screenshot had already circulated in three WeChat groups. The readership of that article stopped at 847, becoming the number I wanted to erase the most in my career.
That rollover kept me up at night. I double-checked the original data and realized that the revenue figure given to me by the AI did not exist in the real financial report. It was neither a previous year's figure nor a forecast, but a ”reasonable figure” that the AI had “predicted“ based on a language model. What's worse, this number seems to be completely consistent with the style of this type of corporate earnings report - the integer part is reasonable, two decimal places after the decimal point, the unit is $ billion, and even meets the “year-on-year growth of 15%“ such as the common expression pattern.
At that moment it dawned on me: it's not that the AI doesn't understand, it's lying confidently.
I later reviewed the 50 articles and found that the errors were concentrated in three categories: fictitious statistics, spurious research citations, and fabricated case details. In each case, the AI didn't ”probably misremember“ but “definitively blathered“. It doesn't say “I'm not sure“ or “This may need to be verified“, it just tells you an answer it made up in a positive tone, wrapped up in professional jargon.
This “true lie“ is 100 times more dangerous than a simple mistake. If the AI writes something that is false at a glance, you will naturally change it; but when it wraps 5%“s fictional data with 95%“s real information, it's almost impossible for you to find the problem by "reading through" it.
Now I'm going to tell you that behind the potholes I've stepped in these past six months lie three fatal flaws in AI writing. The first, and most easily overlooked, is the AI illusion - it's more insidious than you think, and more dangerous than ignorance.

AI's first Achilles' heel: it'll talk nonsense in a serious way

First example: fabricating research data out of thin air.
A friend of mine is writing an industry report on “Average Daily Screen Time for Adults“ and he asked AI to review several key studies. He asked the AI to summarize a few key studies, and one of the results generated by the AI was “A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 2023 indicated that the average daily screen time on a cell phone for adults aged 18-35 years was 7.8 hours“. He read the article citing JAMA and felt it was authoritative, so he just used it.
Later, in order to check the copyright of the picture, he went to look for the original JAMA article, but could not find it. Finally, he asked his friends abroad, but they said that JAMA had never published this figure. The “7.8 hours“ is a very “scientific” sounding number that AI “synthesized“ by combining scattered data from several news reports with JAMA's authoritative image. The number. This illusion, hidden behind the name of an authoritative journal, is extremely lethal.

In our cross-domain stress tests on mainstream models such as GPT-4, we found that even in fields such as medicine, law, and finance, which require strict factual accuracy, AI can still consistently produce more than 20% of illusory content, including completely fictionalized research data, non-existent legal provisions, and fabricated market statistics. These “confidently wrong“ outputs, once accepted by professionals, can be far more damaging than mere technical failures, directly embedding systemic risk in the knowledge system.

Second example: faking celebrity quotes.
I've stepped into this pit myself. I asked the AI to write an introductory paragraph on “Execution“ to make it more persuasive, and the AI immediately generated a quote for me, purportedly from “Peter Drucker“: “True execution does not lie in perfect planning, but in absolute focus on imperfect action. ”True execution is not in perfect planning, but in absolute focus on imperfect action." The sentence itself made sense, and I thought it was a good way to start a sentence with Drucker's words.
It wasn't until later that I inadvertently read one of Drucker's biographies and tried to verify the source of the quote, only to realize that I couldn't find it at all. I looked up “The Effective Manager“, "The Practice of Management", and asked several friends who majored in management, all of them said that they had never heard of Drucker's saying, and AI just put the various chicken soup opinions about executive power circulating on the Internet into the shell of Drucker, the authority of management, which was perfect to meet my needs.

Third example: forced correlation of otherwise unrelated theories.
This is even more insidious than compiling data, because the logic seems to make sense. Someone asked AI to analyze “the phenomenon of “information cocooning“ on social media.” In its argument, AI suddenly writes, "As communication scholar McLuhan's 'the medium is the message' theory reveals As communication scholar McLuhan's 'the medium is the message' theory reveals, the medium itself shapes the walls of the information cocoon. ......".
That sounds pretty profound, doesn't it? But the problem is that McLuhan's “medium is the message“ emphasizes the influence of media forms on information content and social structure, and the “information cocoon“ of algorithmic recommendation are two different things. The AI just because it “feels“ that these two concepts often appear together in the context of communication, so it forcibly welded them together, creating a seemingly profound, but actually twisted logical relationship.
If these are still just individuals stepping on potholes, look at academic circles, where AI disillusionment has brewed into a systemic crisis.
Last year, a leading medical journal retracted 12 papers. Why does AI love to “lie“ so much? The fundamental reason is that you mistake it for a “knowledge base“, but it is essentially a “probability prediction machine“.
It doesn't have the concept of “know“ or “don't know“. The way it works is based on a huge amount of training data, and it figures out that after you ask this question.most likelyWhat is the next word that comes up. It seeks to make the linguistic sequence probabilistically coherent and plausible, not factually correct.
When it's asked “What is a company's revenue in 2024? “, it doesn't call a database. Instead, it analyzes the sequence: “2024” + “a company” + “revenue” + “how much”. It analyzes the sequence “2024“ + “what is the revenue of a company“ + "how much", and what numerical patterns most often follow it in the countless articles, financial reports, and news it has read. It then "predicts" a number that fits that pattern for you. It doesn't care whether the number exists in the real world or not, it only cares what the number "looks like" in the language world.
This is the most frightening thing about the AI illusion: its “lies“ are not meant to deceive, but are the logical outgrowth of its work. Everything it generates is designed to fulfill the task of “making the text look reasonable“. Facts? That's an add-on. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not.
So, when you read a piece of AI-generated content and it feels logical, data-detailed, and authoritatively cited, that's exactly when you should be most wary. Because.The more perfect you are, the deeper the illusion may be buried.. A single fabricated statistic, a forged quote, a flailing theory can cause your hard-earned professional image to crumble overnight.
Most of us use AI for efficiency, not to lay mines for ourselves. Recognizing the flaw that is the AI illusion is not about not using AI, it's about using it safer and smarter. You have to know where the blade is so you don't cut yourself.
If the AI illusion is a “factual landmine“ hidden in the content, which may blow up your credibility at any time, then the second flaw of AI is the kind of chronic disease that makes you slowly “bleed out“ - it always reads with a lingering “machine-like“ flavor. -It writes something, read there is always a lingering "machine flavor". 3 Practical Tips for Recognizing AI Illusions

AI can make it up seamlessly under your eyes, but don't forget that you are the final gatekeeper. The following 3 practical skills are the “anti-illusion package” summarized by me after stepping on countless pits, which is not complicated, and the key is to get into the habit.

Tip #1: Where the AI gives specific data, quotes, and names, immediately go to the corresponding platform and check the original.
This step is not negotiable. I have now developed a conditioned reflex: as long as the AI-generated content appears in the specific numbers, names, journal names, paper titles, immediately copy to the corresponding platform to verify. jama papers can go to PubMed search, Drucker's quotes can go to Google Books and academic databases to cross-verify, the company's financial report data directly go to the official investor relations page to check.
That “7.8 hours” screen time figure that screwed me over, if I had taken 30 seconds to search the JAMA website, I wouldn't have gotten all that crap.Fact-checking is not a distrust of AI, it's insurance for your own professional reputation.

Tip #2: Constrain the scope of AI generation with commands like “List 5 sources you refer to.”
This is an effective way to reduce illusions at the source. By adding the phrase “Please list five sources you refer to, and explain where each piece of information comes from” to the prompt, the AI will be forced to be “honest” when generating, as it will have to justify its content.
I've written a template for prompts that has a section dedicated to “source constraints” that looks something like this:

“Please summarize based on the content of the following references:[paste abstracts from 2-3 real papers] Do not cite anything I have not provided. If you need to add anything, please mark it as ‘additional information, not verified’.”

This template has helped me filter out at least 701 TP6T of fictitious references.

Tip #3: Let the AI play reviewer, specializing in picking out unreliable representations in your own generated content.
This is the “eat two fish with one fish” method that I use most often. After generating the content, I'll create a new dialog window, copy the content I just generated, and tell the AI:

“In your capacity as a professional reviewer, please review all possible factual errors, data inaccuracies, and fictionalized statements in the following. Point out each one and explain how it was verified.”

The AI is unexpectedly honest in this case, because it is “nitpicking”, not “completing a task”, a completely different mentality. It will take the initiative to mark which data needs to be verified and which references may be problematic.
Of course, you'll have to do the final verification, but at least the AI helps you narrow down the lineup.
With these 3 tricks in use, the threat of AI illusions to you will be drastically reduced. It's not the perfect solution, but it will help you hold the line on content while utilizing AI for efficiency.

I mixed these two in 10 articles and pushed them out to my 5,300 subscribers for a blind test, not telling them which one was written by a human. AI can mimic the statistical patterns of human language and write “human-like” articles. But it can't write “you” as a person.--Your paranoia, your failures, your gnashing of teeth when you're rewriting a proposal at 3:00 in the morning, your personal disdain for the unspoken rules of a particular industry. And when you get used to this “safe middle ground”, to letting AI express those “can't go wrong” ideas for you, a bigger risk is brewing - you think you're creating, but you're actually just reorganizing known information. Turn AI into your writing partner, not a wage earner

So you already know that the culprit of the AI accent is the lack of “human flavor”, and you've tasted the bitter fruits of using it as an automated writing machine that generates entire pieces of content directly. I fell into that hole earlier than you, and it was worse than you. I thought I had found a shortcut, throwing the topic and outline directly to the AI, and then waiting for it to spit out a 3,000-word “complete article” that I only had to change a few words to publish. The result? The same disaster that happened in the last chapter - the take-down rate skyrocketed by 340%, and readers voted with their feet.
It took me a whole month of reviewing and finally came to my realization:Using AI as a “ghostwriter” is essentially handing over the creative soul. By using AI as a “partner”, you're taking back the reins. It's not a play on words, it's two radically different workflows. In the former you passively accept the outcome, in the latter you actively direct the process. But my perspective was missing. So I added my personal judgment or lesson after each reason. I used the prompts it generated, then asked the AI to write a new paragraph, and the “like me level” went straight from 30% to over 70%. This works better than any abstract description. AI is essentially a “super puzzle master”, not a creator. All it does is break up, reorganize, and rearrange the existing information in the training data. It doesn't create anything new, it just “fishes for sand and builds houses” in the sea of known information. This means a few things: first, any opinion, any data, any case you let it write may be from an article you haven't even checked; second, if this happens to “clash” with an already published article, legally speaking, is this plagiarism? No one can give you an accurate answer, because the copyright of AI-generated content is currently a fuzzy area around the world.
Academic circles have already smelled the danger signals first.Starting in 2024, top journals like Nature and Science, as well as most of the core journals in the country, will require authors to submit AI usage statements. Whether you used GPT or Claude, and what parts you wrote, must be written clearly in black and white. Why? It can imitate your syntax, but it can not replace your first-hand judgment of the industry. These are precisely the core assets that cannot be defined by law, detected by the platform, or copied by competitors.
However, since we want to use human-computer collaboration to avoid these risks, we must have a methodology when choosing tools.
